There were dozens of coal mines in and between the cities of Jiu Valley. Petroșani, Lupeni, Uricani, Vulcan, Petrila, Aninoasa all grew together with mining, starting from the second half of the 19th century. After 1997, most of them were closed, leaving local population without jobs and perspectives.
